Paste or type a list of numbers to get the three common averages — mean, median and mode — plus the range, count and sum. Numbers can be separated by commas, spaces or line breaks, so you can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.

Formula

Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n

The median is the middle value once the list is sorted (the average of the two middle values for an even count). The mode is the most frequent value. The range is the largest value minus the smallest.

Worked example

For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8: the sum is 116, so the mean is 116 ÷ 7 ≈ 16.57. Sorted, the list is 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, so the median is 15. The mode is 8, and the range is 42 − 4 = 38.

Mean or median?

The mean uses every value but is pulled by outliers; the median is not. That is why incomes and house prices are usually reported as medians.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the average?

Add all the values and divide by how many there are. The average of 2, 4 and 9 is 15 ÷ 3 = 5.

Can a list have more than one mode?

Yes. If several values tie for the most appearances, they are all modes. If no value repeats, there is no mode.
