Crushed stone is the workhorse aggregate for driveway bases, drainage trenches, French drains and under slabs. Enter the area and depth to see how many cubic yards and tons to order.
The default density of 2,700 lb/yd³ (about 1.6 t/m³) suits common sizes such as #57 stone; very fine or very coarse stone can differ.
Formula
Tons = Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27 × Density ÷ 2,000
Length and width in feet, depth in feet, density in lb per cubic yard.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft base, 4 inches deep: 120 × 0.333 = 40 ft³ = 1.48 yd³. At 2,700 lb/yd³ that is exactly 2 tons, or 2.1 tons with 5% extra.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of crushed stone do I need for a driveway?
Multiply the driveway area by the depth to get the volume, then by about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. A 10 ft × 50 ft driveway at 4 inches needs about 6.2 yd³, or roughly 8.3 tons.
What is #57 stone?
A common crushed-stone size of roughly 1/2 to 1 inch pieces, used for drainage, concrete aggregate and driveway surfaces.
