Enter the size of the area and how deep you want the gravel to estimate the volume and weight to order. Gravel is usually sold by the ton (or tonne) or by the cubic yard, so both are shown, along with an optional cost.
The default density of 2,800 lb per cubic yard (about 1.66 t/m³) is typical for common gravel; pea gravel and crushed stone vary, so check with your supplier.
Formula
Volume = Area × Depth · Weight = Volume × Density
Convert the depth to the same unit as the area first: 3 inches is 0.25 ft. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft area covered 3 inches deep needs 120 × 0.25 = 30 ft³, or 1.11 yd³. At 2,800 lb/yd³ that weighs about 1.56 tons. With 5% extra, order about 1.17 yd³ (1.63 tons).
How deep should gravel be?
About 2 inches (5 cm) for decorative cover, 3 inches (7–8 cm) for paths and patios, and 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) or more for driveways, usually over a compacted base layer.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
Typically about 2,400–3,000 lb (1.2–1.5 US tons), depending on the stone size and how wet it is.
How much area does a ton of gravel cover?
At 3 inches deep, a ton of gravel covers roughly 75–85 square feet (about 7–8 m²).
