Soil, mulch, gravel, sand and concrete are all sold by the cubic yard (or cubic metre). Enter the length, width and depth of the space to fill to convert it into the volume to order.
Formula
Cubic yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27
A cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³. Remember to convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12.
Worked example
A 10 × 10 ft area, 6 inches deep: 10 × 10 × 0.5 = 50 ft³, and 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards (1.42 m³).
